The High-Oscillation Revolution: Customized Flexible Interfaces for Screening Machines Eliminate Downtime and Maximize Throughput
1. The Critical Challenge of High-Oscillation Screening
Vibratory screeners, tumbler screens and high-G separators are the workhorses of powder processing — but their connection points are the #1 failure site. The screen box oscillates at 4g–50g acceleration while the downstream chute stays fixed. Every cycle applies dynamic shear to the interface.
Three failure modes dominate:
- Clamp-edge tearing: a hose clamp concentrates stress at a single line, and under high-frequency dynamic shear the sleeve cracks exactly there.
- Premature wear: constant flexing plus abrasive powder (milk powder, starch, battery cathode, API) thins a standard rubber or silicone wall within weeks.
- Stress transmission: a rigid or over-tight interface transmits screen vibration into the chute, cracking welds and distorting downstream equipment.
2. The Solution: An Engineered Interface, Not a Generic Boot
A snap-in flexible connector is not a spare part — it is a designed component of the screening line. SOSHH engineers each interface to the screen’s specific amplitude, frequency, g-force and powder.
2.1 Material Selection — matched to the duty
| DUTY | RECOMMENDED MATERIAL | KEY PROPERTIES |
|---|---|---|
| Food, dairy, general powder | Polyether TPU (PU-10) | 1.0 mm wall, 40 MPa, Shore A 90, −20 to +110 °C |
| Abrasive / high-wear powder | Polyether TPU (PU-15) | 1.5 mm wall, +0.70 bar / −120 mbar |
| Static-dissipative / ATEX | PU-10-AS | 10⁶–10⁹ Ω surface resistivity, no wires |
| Full vacuum discharge | PU-10-VR | Polymer rings, −1000 mbar |
| Hot CIP / daily washdown | CIP-grade polyether TPU | Hydrolysis-resistant, 85 °C CIP |
2.2 Geometry — engineered for the motion
- Tapered transitions match the screen outlet to a smaller downstream line without ledges.
- Square-to-round and eccentric offsets are fabricated as one-piece sleeves to suit existing equipment.
- Installation gap (IG) is set with 10–15% extra slack for vibratory service, so the sleeve never runs in tension at full amplitude.
2.3 Sealing — tool-free, crevice-free
The cuff is HF-welded slightly undersized, then snaps over a tapered stainless spigot (SS304 or SS316L) to form a 360° radial compression seal. There are no clamps, no drilled holes, no torque settings — and no crevices to trap powder or harbour bacteria.
Process note: SOSHH sleeves use HF-welded exterior pockets and a polymer snap-band system, keeping the product-contact bore 100% metal-free and flush.
3. Quantifiable Benefits
- Longer service life: polyether TPU offers roughly 10× the abrasion resistance of rubber (39.0 mg DIN vs. typical rubber), eliminating the weekly sleeve-change cycle.
- Zero leakage: the 360° compression seal removes the clamp-edge leak path entirely.
- Structural protection: the flexible wall decouples screen vibration from fixed pipework, protecting downstream welds and load cells.
- Faster changeover: a worn sleeve is replaced tool-free in under 60 seconds during a screen change or CIP cycle.
4. Compliance for Regulated Plants
- Food / dairy: FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 (Report TQT4821B36E), EU 10/2011, EC 1935/2004, latex-free and phthalate-free.
- Combustible dust / ATEX: PU-10-AS with surface resistivity 10⁶–10⁹ Ω and volume resistivity 4.02×10⁷ Ω tested per IEC 62631-3-1:2023 (SGS SHMR240801578301-1); engineered for ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, Zones 20/21/22 (IEC 60079-32-2).
- Spigots: EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate with every order.
